What is varicose veins?
Varicose veins are the enlarged, dilated or swollen veins which are overfilled with blood .Varicose veins may appear swollen and raised and they are bluish or pink in color.
They are painful in many cases.varicose veins are very common and in most of the cases ,varicose veins appear on the legs.
Cause of varicose veins :
Veins acts as storage for unused blood this storing capacity is due to the elasticity of the walls of veins ,veins are the blood vessels that return blood from all the organs toward the heart, different organs use the oxygen rich blood to perform their function ,and release the blood containing waste products into the veins blood in the vein is then transported to heart and lungs where waste products is released and blood is again made oxygen rich .
If elasticity of vein is lost, veins can bulge with blood when they fail to circulate the blood properly.
Some other causes for varicose veins includes:
- Pregnancy
- Age above 50
- Prolong standing
- Obesity
- Family history of varicose veins
Symptoms of varicose veins
There is always heaviness, tenderness or pain in legs due to varicose veins , there will be visible dilated or enlarged veins on the lower legs. Some times patients might also develop swelling or discoloration in severe cases , varicose ulcers may also form.
Dos and don’ts in varicose veins
- Patients should avoid standing for too extended periods.
- Always follow healthy life style with exercise and maintain healthy weight.
- Exercise of legs to improve circulation .
- Always use stockings when moving out.
- Always elevate the legs whenever you are resting or sleeping.
